Here is something you don’t see every day: a former Iowan, tapping Hollywood glitterati to raise money for a voter identification project in Texas.

Comedian/actor Jim Turner, son of Iowa sportscaster and hall of fame golfer George Turner, has been holding “Stars in the Backyard” events at his home in Los Angeles with guests ranging from Will Farrell to Judd Apetow, Sandra Oh and Patton Oswalt, according to Turner’s brother Jon.

The events raise money for a voter turnout effort in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The next event is April 23 and features Weird Al Yankovic, said Jon Turner.

Older Iowans remember Jim Turner as a member of the Iowa City-based comedy group Duck’s Breath Mystery Theatre, during the 1970s and ’80s. Middle-aged fans may know him as the character Kirby Carlisle in the 1990s HBO series “Arliss,” or as Larry in the 2005 version of “Bewitched.” Turner has appeared in 22 films, 28 TV series and 18 stage plays.
