Forty Under 40: Emilee Richardson
Marketing and Communications Manager, Science Center of Iowa
As a self-proclaimed science geek, it’s not hard for Emilee Richardson to fit in around the office.
But her role at the Science Center of Iowa is about more than fitting in.
Richardson started at the Science Center eight years ago as an education programs presenter, helping her to get to know the museum’s patrons and how they interacted with the organization.
“I always loved science and learning,” she said. “Both my parents were teachers, and that value was instilled in me really young.”
Richardson moved through the Science Center’s marketing ranks until she landed in her current position, a role that has allowed her to have a hand in creating new programs like the Girls In Science Initiative, which encourages young girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Richardson attended Drake University, where she majored in marketing and public relations.
“I considered a career in medicine but found out I don’t like blood very much,” she said. “I chose this career because I’m a person who likes to be in the know and who likes to know what’s new and happening.”
Richardson’s community involvement also helps her be in the know.
The two-time president of Young Professionals Connection got an early start in leadership when she was the president of her 4-H club in her hometown of Clarinda.
Outside of work and YPC, Richardson is a new member of Lead Like a Lady, a networking group for aspiring female leaders.
She also stays involved with Drake as the marketing and public relations chair of the college’s Young Alumni Committee.
One might also catch Richardson at a live music event or making lattes at Smokey Row Coffee Co. Still, she values her down time.
“You hear a lot about leaders being extroverts,” she said. “I wear that hat well, but I also really value my close, personal relationships and the time I get to just sit, think and process things.”
Reasons she’s a forty:
• She serves as president of the Young Professionals Connection Des Moines board of directors.
• Through YPC, she spearheaded a collaboration with Juice magazine to create the Central Iowa YP of the Year Awards.
• She is a member of committees serving the Drake University Young Alumni Association and the Des Moines Community Playhouse. She also is a member of Lead Like a Lady, Young Nonprofit Professionals Network and American Marketing Association Iowa.
• She was named one of the 14 People to Watch in 2014 by The Des Moines Register and was a 2015 Central Iowa YP of the Year finalist.
