Gannett announces another round of furloughs
Gannett Co. Inc., publisher of The Des Moines Register, yesterday announced to employees it would implement another round of unpaid first-quarter furloughs for most of its workers. The furloughs will be the fifth such round imposed on the company’s work force within the past three years, according to the Gannett Blog, an unofficial blog site. Gannett officials said in a memo to employees that the furloughs will affect most of the employees within its newspaper division as well as its printing and distribution division. Furloughs have saved the company a combined $67 million since 2009, according to filings with federal securities regulators.
