Thirty-five high school students arrived at Drake University today to begin a three-day leadership camp through the GEAR Up Iowa program. During the Quantum Learning Camp, the students will learn creative-thinking, problem-solving and goal-setting skills as well as develop their leadership and team-building potential to prepare for college and beyond. Administered by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission, GEAR UP Iowa (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is charged with significantly increasing the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The program is funded by a $16.8 million federal grant. Drake will house the students in its residence halls and all learning sessions will be conducted on the campus.
