The Transportation Institute at Des Moines Area Community College is getting a $127,400 grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to pay tuition for some students pursuing a commercial driver’s license, or CDL, according to a news release. Eligible students include veterans, their family members, and members of underrepresented populations. The federal grant program is aimed at producing more CDL holders who have undergone enhanced safety training and providing opportunities for veterans and for rural, refugee and underserved communities, the news release said. “This grant will support the trucking industry by developing more safe drivers to address the trucking needs in Iowa,” Derrick Walker, DMACC’s director of Manufacturing, Engineering, Trades & Transportation, said in a prepared statement. Three other Iowa community colleges received funding: Iowa Central in Fort Dodge, Hawkeye in Waterloo, and Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City. More information about DMACC’s program is at cdl.dmacc.edu.
