Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity has begun construction of its 500th affordable home, which is being built in the organization’s Carter Court development near Northeast 46th Street and Hubbell Avenue. To celebrate the accomplishment, the Wells Fargo Foundation today announced that it was donating $500,000 to the nonprofit group. The announcement was made at Wells Fargo’s Jordan Creek campus during an event in which employees of the financial institution framed walls for a Habitat house. Wells Fargo and Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity have a more than 30-year relationship. Local Wells Fargo volunteers have provided more than 100,000 volunteer hours to Habitat, and Wells Fargo has contributed more than $1.5 million since 2014 to support the organization’s work in Polk, Dallas and Jasper counties. The Greater Des Moines Habitat group began building houses in Central Iowa in 1987. Since 2020, the group has built 100 homes.
