City officials, members of the Long family and the Valley Junction neighborhood will gather at 1:30 p.m. Friday outside of the Eddie Davis Community Center at 1312 Maple St. in West Des Moines for the unveiling of the Johnny E. Long Jr. and Barbara Long Honorary Roadway sign. The West Des Moines City Council recently approved an amended Honorary Roadway Naming Policy to honor current and former residents who have made demonstrable and positive contributions to the city during their lifetime. An application was submitted and approved unanimously by the City Council on June 5 to place honorary roadway signs on Maple Street, between First Street and 14th Street, in honor of the late John and Barbara Long. The Longs are the first residents to receive a historic honorary street designation in West Des Moines. Johnny (1933-2010) and Barbara (1931-2021) spent the majority of their lives in Valley Junction and helped create the Eddie Davis Community Center. They served as community advocates to improve the area and to help residents receive needed resources and services.
