Hoyt Sherman Place plans to use $710,000 it received in historic tax credits from the state to restore historical significance to the second floor of the mansion, including the master bedroom, sitting parlor and children’s bedrooms, officials with the historic theater announced in a news release this week. Hoyt Sherman Place was one of 15 projects that were awarded nearly $15 million in tax credits through the Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program announced earlier this month by the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Other planned improvements will be made to art galleries and the theater. “This funding proves our commitment to this historic facility, its maintenance and improvements,” said Robert Warren, Hoyt Sherman Place executive director. The restoration will include period-appropriate window treatments, furniture, flooring, paint, lighting and decor. The space will also showcase recently acquired photos of the Sherman family. When complete, the project will open the second floor of the mansion to public tours for the first time in recent history. Other already completed improvements include a new HVAC system, new signage in the theater, an improved handicap-accessible lift, updated security in the art galleries, and a new sound system in the theater.
