Hy-Vee Inc. is expanding its retail store at 1005 E. Hickman Road in Waukee by more than one-third, adding sports, shoe and clothing shops, information submitted to the city shows.

In addition, the retailer is expanding the amount of space devoted to its Aisles Online service, according to information provided to the city.

West Des Moines-based Hy-Vee built the 89,765-square-foot store on the site in 2013. A year earlier, it built a convenience store with fuel pumps. In 2019, it added an Aisles Online kiosk, which includes three lanes from which customers can pick up preordered groceries.

Hy-Vee is proposing to add 30,383 square feet to the west side of the existing store, according to information provided to the city. The additional space will allow the store to add DSW Shoes, Joe Fresh Clothing, and Sports Shop, the company’s first one in Iowa, a spokesperson said. The Sports Shop will carry apparel from local high school teams as well as college-level teams.

Aisles Online will be moved from the southwest portion of the property to the west side of the store. It will expand to four lanes, according to city information. The current site of Aisle Online will become parking for customers.

Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s CEO, recently told employees that the company was eliminating Aisles Online services at some of its stores, according to a Des Moines Register article. Edeker said 117 stores were responsible for 88% of the company’s e-commerce revenue. Hy-Vee has more than 280 retail sites in eight states.

Both the Waukee City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission approved the site plan for the proposed expansion.
