The West Des Moines City Council is expected to approve an expansion of Hy-Vee Inc.’s corporate headquarters at tonight’s meeting.

The plan calls for an addition of 30,445 square feet to the northeast corner of its office building at 5820 Westown Parkway, which will add office space and storage; it also plans to add about 20 parking spaces south of the building. When completed, the company will have 122,000 square feet of office and 34,000 square feet of conference space with a little more than 700 parking spaces.

The city staff supports the proposal, and city planner Linda Schemmel believes some site work could begin this fall. Hy-Vee Weitz Construction will handle the project.

“From what I understand, Hy-Vee is not planning to add employees,” Schemmel said, but rather is upgrading to add more office and storage space. Hy-Vee did not immediately return phone calls.
