ICON Water Trails receives $15M from Water Infrastructure Fund for Raccoon River improvements
Iowa Confluence Water Trails has been awarded $15 million through the state’s Water Infrastructure Fund for improvements on the Raccoon River along Fleur Drive. According to the announcement, the funding was part of a larger allocation of $38 million that included assistance to two other projects around the state. The $15 million to ICON Water Trails will mitigate the dam on Fleur Drive, removing hazards that will allow residents to enjoy a river run experience and create a recreational destination in the area. According to the ICON Water Trails website, the improvements will feature beginner-friendly whitewater activities, and allow children and adults to learn surfing and kayaking at their own comfort level. Other ICON projects are being developed at Scott Avenue and Center Street. ICON Water Trails will connect more than 80 improvements along 150 miles of waterways in Central Iowa. The $125 million initiative is a regional collaboration among a dozen local government partners working with the private sector. The funding announced Friday brings $76.7 million in funding for ICON Water Trails. That includes about $28.4 million in private dollars, $8.2 million in municipal grants and $25.1 million in federal funding. Other projects to be awarded funding are in Dyersville and Sioux Center.
