Iowa architecture firms were recognized at the recent American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter’s (AIA Iowa) Annual Awards held in Des Moines. The awards recognize excellence in design by members of AIA Iowa and emphasize architecture and its importance across Iowa and beyond.

The award winners include:

AIA IOWA EXCELLENCE IN CRAFT AWARDS: A Merit Award went to ASK Studio for the Ullem Chapel, located near Iconium, Iowa. Jury comment: “It has presence. It’s well put together, especially considering its remote location and challenges of the construction process.” An Honor Award went to Substance Architecture for Downtown Bridges. Jury comment: “We really appreciate the story and how the project demonstrates craft can happen at the level of infrastructure, not just custom buildings.”

AIA IOWA EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN AWARDS: A Merit Award was given to RDG Planning and Design for the Lake Como Park Pavilion. Jury comment: “Form and view is incredible; it’s well composed and articulated. And we loved the oddly shaped wood benches.” A Merit Award was given to Invision Architecture for Kinship Brewery in Waukee. Jury comment: “It’s interesting and handsome. We loved the colorful strip at the ground – nice element that pulled through and grabbed the landscape, anchoring the structure in an otherwise boundless field.” A Merit Award was given to OPN Architects Inc. for the Flint Public Library in Michigan. Jury comment: “The interior is amazing for the type of building it is, considerate and communal. In terms of projects that have a big impact on their communities this feels like a strong one.” An Honor Award was given to Knop Architects for St. Kilda Cafe. Jury comment: “This is one of the most tightly detailed interiors we’ve ever seen. There is an amazing level of craft and clarity in the resolution of the space.” An Honor Award was given to OPN Architects for Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust. Jury comment: “It’s an exceptionally strong project all in all. The interior is beautiful, and light filled. This building type that is normally a pat repeated form, but they knocked it out of the park.” Honorable mentions were given to Substance Architecture for Capturing an Artist’s Vision: A Monumental Journey and to BBS Architects | Engineers for the Catholic Pastoral Center.
