Iowa Department of Education awards nearly $900,000 to expand summer meal sites
The Iowa Department of Education awarded nearly $900,000 in competitive grants to 38 school districts and other qualified organizations to help more Iowa youths access nutritious meals and snacks during the summer. The grant awards will support 61 new summer meal sites in areas not previously served by expanding participation in two existing state-administered, federally funded summer child nutrition programs. The grants will expand Central Iowa programs in Des Moines, Waukee, Adel, Indianola, Colo, Boone, Maxwell and Collins. These sites provide nutritious meals and snacks to youths in low-income areas during the summer months at no cost to families. The full list of awardees is available on the Iowa Department of Education website.
