Iowa Latino Hall of Fame honorees announced

The Iowa Department of Human Rights and the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs announced they will induct five people into the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame. The 2021 honorees are Elizabeth Bernal of Iowa City, Marcela Hurtado of Iowa City, Dr. Lorenzo Jasso (posthumous) of Des Moines, Nixson Benitez of Des Moines, Itzel Padron Zuniga of Des Moines and Juan Manuel Galvez Ibarra of North Liberty. Established by the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs, the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame recognizes, honors and celebrates the efforts of Latino leaders across the state in four categories: Latino/Latina/Latinx advocate/leader, Iowa Latinx youth leadership award, Iowa LGBTQIA leadership award and the Robert D. Ray award for equity and justice. The honorees will officially be inducted into the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame on Oct. 16 at a ceremony at the Des Moines Art Center.
