The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $84.1 million to Iowa through its Disaster Recovery Enhancement Fund as part of $312 million in grants made to 13 states. The funding is intended to encourage states to pursue long-term strategies to reduce damage from future natural disasters. The money can be used for buyout payments to homeowners living in high-risk areas, home improvement grants designed to reduce damage risks, improvement and enforcement of building codes and development of land-use plans, among other uses.
