Iowa’s unemployment rate at 8% in June
Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate slipped to 8% in June, down from 10.2% in May, Iowa Workforce Development reported today. Iowa’s unemployment rate in June 2019 was 3.7%. “Moving out of double-digit unemployment is a tremendously positive good sign for our economic recovery as businesses reopen and Iowans return to work,” Beth Townsend, the state agency’s director, said in a prepared statement. The new information comes a day after the agency reported an uptick in the number of unemployment claims filed last week. According to the agency, 50,200 jobs were added in Iowa in June, erasing some of the layoffs caused by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Overall, Iowa’s nonfarm employment in June totaled 1.46 million, down 7.4% from the 1.58 million employed a year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate was 11.1% in June.
