Iowa’s unemployment rate remains at 2.7%

170 wordsAll Latest News, Economic DevelopmentIowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was 2.7%, the same as it was in April, Iowa Workforce Development reported today.
Overall, 46,300 Iowans were unemployed in May; in May 2022, 41,500 Iowans were unemployed.
Iowa’s total nonfarm employment was 1,596,400 last month, down slightly from April when nonfarm employment totaled 1,596,600. In May 2022, Iowa’s total nonfarm employment was 1,565,000. Last month, an additional 31,400 Iowans were working, the report shows.
“May was yet another month where large numbers of Iowans reentered the workforce and quickly found jobs,” Beth Townsend, Iowa Workforce Development director, said in a prepared statement. “Across Iowa, businesses continue looking for the workers they need to help our state prosper and grow.”
Still, several sectors shed jobs in May, including manufacturing, which lost 1,400 jobs. Other sectors that lost between 100 and 200 jobs included mining, construction, financial activities, and leisure and hospitality.
Education and health services added 900 jobs.
The U.S. unemployment rate in May was 3.7%, up from 3.4% in April.
