Is the Kum & Go brand name disappearing?

One of the questions Chuck Maggelet was asked when Salt Lake City-based Maverik completed its acquisition of the Kum & Go convenience store in August was whether the Iowa chain’s name would be retained.

Maggelet told the Business Record that Kum & Go stores would be rebranded to Maverik in states where the Utah-based chain had strong name recognition. However, in states like Iowa, where there are no Maverik stores, the Kum & Go name would remain.

Michelle Monson, Maverik’s communications and corporate social responsibility director, when asked about the report, responded to a Business Record inquiry this way: “Maverik has not announced any confirmed plans outside of rebranding stores in existing Maverik markets but please feel free to check back for updates!”

Monson’s comment comes as other reports suggest that thinking may have changed.

Mitch Morrison, a longtime industry analyst who writes for the convenience store trade news website CSP, reported earlier this week that by 2025, all 400 Kum & Go stores acquired by Maverik would be rebranded as Maveriks. Morrison’s article cited anonymous sources.

Also this week, the Des Moines Register reported that most of Kum & Go’s quirky social media posts have disappeared.
