Students in Iowa State University’s “The Science and Practice of Brewing” course, part of ISU’s brewing science program, were challenged by Coralville-based Backpocket Brewing to create a new India pale ale (IPA) for commercial production. The winners, determined by a panel of judges including ISU faculty and Luke Jipp, head brewer at Backpocket, were Connor Hollarbush, Trenton Major, Grant Miller, David Nelson and Steven Ragan, with their beer titled Alien Juice Party. Alien Juice Party was officially launched during a release party on Dec. 13. The beer will be sold on tap at Backpocket’s Johnston, Coralville and Dubuque locations starting Dec. 20.
