Dave Busiek, the award-winning news director at KCCI Channel 8, has announced his retirement at the end of 2018, according to a news release from the station. He is the third person to have served as news director at the CBS affiliate.

Busiek, who was named news director in 1990, previously joined KCCI as a reporter and anchored KCCI 8 News at Ten.

“I feel so fortunate to have had such a long career at one station. Thirty-nine years at the station, with 29 of those as news director, is pretty rare in a competitive field like TV news,” Busiek said in the release.

During his career, Busiek was named News Director of the Year, was awarded the Silver Circle Award by the Midwest Television Academy of Arts and Sciences, was recently inducted into the Iowa Broadcasters Hall of Fame and was named a Jack Shelley Award winner by the Iowa Broadcast News Association.

“You should know a few things about Dave Busiek,” former colleague and KCCI news anchor Kevin Cooney wrote on Facebook. “He is a great journalist, a superior News Director, a natural leader, a tremendous teacher, a wonderful father and husband and — I’m proud to say — a good friend.”

There were no details on who would replace Busiek.
