The United Way of Central Iowa has announced Grant Kvalheim, president and CEO of Athene, as the recipient of the 2024 Tocqueville Society Award. Past awardees select the recipient from Tocqueville Society members who demonstrate inspirational, sustained leadership and service to Central Iowa, a news release said.

“United Way of Central Iowa has always been a driving force for positive change, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its mission,” Kvalheim said in a prepared statement. “This recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of my colleagues at Athene and the dedication of every individual who believes in building a stronger, more equitable Central Iowa.”

Kvalheim’s involvement with United Way includes serving on its board of directors for six years, chairing the nonprofit’s 2021 campaign and volunteering on United Way cabinets and committees. He has made financial contributions at the Tocqueville Society level since 2014, the news release said.

Since joining Athene in 2011, Kvalheim has worked to engage Athene employees in the company’s United Way campaign, which has more than tripled in size. Athene’s campaign raised $2.46 million this year, a 28.6% increase from 2023, according to the release.

“Central Iowa is fortunate to have a community leader like Grant, whose unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership continue to inspire us all,” Mary Sellers, president of United Way of Central Iowa, said in a prepared statement. “His dedication to United Way is reflected not only in his generous support but also in his remarkable efforts to engage others and drive positive change. As a Tocqueville Society Award recipient, Grant illustrates the power of community collaboration that defines our organization.”

Kvalheim received the award Wednesday during the Tocqueville Society Celebration, which also marked the 40th anniversary of United Way of Central Iowa’s Tocqueville Society. Tocqueville Society members annually contribute $10,000 or more to United Way of Central Iowa.
