I joined the Business Record in August 2010 as a reporter and writer, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the work in my first year on the job. Every day and every story is a new learning experience, and it has been amazing to meet some of the most interesting people in the Greater Des Moines business community, and have the opportunity to share important news with important people. I primarily cover technology and transportation and I quickly discovered there are a lot of things happening within both of those areas in this region.

Central Iowa is home to me. I grew up in the land of tulips and Dutch letters in Pella, and attended Iowa State University. I’ve lived briefly in Washington, D.C. and Central Missouri, but my time living in Des Moines has given me a new appreciation of how neat our capital city and surrounding area is. As a young professional, I’ve found that there are many opportunities to get involved in the community through organizations such as the Young Professionals Connection. Some people think Iowa is boring, but I’ve found that if you can’t find something to do in Des Moines you are not looking hard enough.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family in the area and the good friends I’ve met in Des Moines and at Iowa State. I’m also a big sports fan, a casualty of my background as a sports writer in college. I am a season-ticket holder to Iowa State football and men’s basketball games, and try to attend as many women’s basketball games as I can. I also torture myself with cheering for the Chicago Cubs and attend a number of I-Cubs games each year.  As for any other sport – you name it wand I probably follow it.

I look forward to growing as a professional in Des Moines and serving the business community. The best part of my job is getting to meet the people in this area who make things happen, and it will be interesting to see what the next year brings.

I’ve worked briefly as a USA Today sports intern in Washington, D.C., and as the sports editor of the Chariton Valley News Press in the small Central Missouri town of Salisbury.
