A proposed public-private partnership between the city of Johnston and Ignit Sports and Fitness would include the construction of a recreational complex with an indoor track, soccer field and training facilities and outdoor baseball fields, volleyball courts and soccer field, the city announced.

The complex is proposed on about 30 acres along Merle Hay Road, north of Interstate Highway 80/35.

Ignit Sports and Fitness currently operates an indoor sports, training and fitness facility in Grimes.

Johnston officials began discussing a partnership with Ignit owners Chad and Brian O’Meara about two years ago, according to a news release. The proposed 189,000-square-foot indoor recreation complex would be privately owned and operated.

The city of Johnston would develop an outdoor playground and public outdoor field space that is expected to include the metro area’s first cricket field, according to the release.

The city could contribute between $2.5 and $4 million to the project in the form of infrastructure improvements, according to Adam Plagge, the city’s economic development manager. The improvements would be paid for through tax increment financing.

Final development plans are expected to be completed later this summer.
