Research shows that when fathers are more engaged in care-giving, children actually achieve at higher levels. Yet, even as women become more involved in careers and communities, research also shows women continue to shoulder a disproportionate amount of a household’s caregiving duties. And while society continues to glorify the super women image of a female running the office and managing the home, the unsustainable pressure of those expectations are leading to role overload for women who are in turn choosing to exit the workforce.

As a woman, are you so burnt out after work and evening activities, you can’t even imagine applying for the next promotion, running for office or joining a board?

As a man, do you want to support your wife’s career and be intimately involved in your children’s lives but find work place policies and gender stereotypes make it difficult to balance career and family?

You’re not alone. Gender inequality in the home is holding women back professionally, robbing men of involvement in their children’s lives, stunting the growth of our children, and limiting the economic potential for Central Iowa businesses.

A panel of women AND men will lead a discussion that will explore this challenge, talk about how women can lay the groundwork and set expectations for negotiating or renegotiating their role in the home, and work to identify ways both men and women can have equal opportunities to lead and nurture.

At noon, the audience will engage in a working lunch, discussing what they’ve heard and what common interests, goals, objectives and even challenges that may be shared by others at their table.

Our hope is that these round-table discussions will launch new Lift IOWA circles, providing an intimate and ongoing environment where women can regularly convene, based on mutual convenience, and continue to discuss and support female leadership.
