The need to feed starving children is even greater now during the COVID-19 crisis, Meals from the Heartland’s executive director Greg DeHaai said. “We won’t be able to gather at Hy-Vee Hall this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we simply cannot stop fighting to save the starving,” he said in a release.”So we’ve re-engineered our 13th Annual Hunger Fight, to package meals in a safe, socially distanced manner, and we know Iowans will step up as they always do to make a difference in the lives of those who don’t have enough to eat.” With the new socially distanced procedures, the nonprofit has increased its goal from packaging 4 million meals to package 6 million meals over a three-week period. Two-hour shifts can be scheduled from Aug. 24 to Sept. 12; all packaging will be done at the Patty Cownie Packaging Center at 357 Lincoln St. in West Des Moines.
