Median sale price of DM-area homes hits a record high $266,860

The median sale price of a house sold in the Des Moines area in April reached a record high $266,860, surpassing the previous high of $265,000 set last September, data from the Des Moines Area Association of Realtors shows.

April’s median sale price was $1,917, or 1%, higher than March’s median sale price of $264,943, and was $22,502, or 9.2%, higher than in April 2021, according to the data.

Other highlights from the association’s report on home sales in the Greater Des Moines area, which includes Polk, Dallas, Warren, Jasper, Marion, Madison and Guthrie counties, include:

  • 1,331 residences were sold in April, up slightly from the 1,322 sold a year ago. For the first four months of 2022, 4,481 residences have been sold. During the same period in 2021, 4,349 had been sold.
  • Residences sold in an average of 32 days in April, the quickest pace so far in 2022. In March, residences were sold in an average of 46 days. Of the 1,331 residences sold in April, 75%, or 1,006, were sold in 30 days or less.
  • Six of the residences sold in April were priced at $1 million or higher. In April 2021, eight were sold for $1 million or more.
