Michael Foods donated 72 pallets, or 84,000 pounds of pre-cooked eggs and egg products. “This significant donation could not have come at a better time,” Emily Shearer, senior manager of food acquisition and advocacy at Food Bank of Iowa, said in a prepared statement. “These egg entrees not only provide a delicious source of protein, but they’re easy for anyone to prepare. And repackaging them into family friendly portions is a terrific project for our volunteers.” Egg prices rose 37% in 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and are on track to climb 20% more in 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s price outlook, a news release said. Shearer said Food Bank of Iowa has very limited quantities of shell eggs available to its partners in 55 Iowa counties. Most shell eggs are donated by producers, and purchasing them has become “too cost-prohibitive” with current pricing and supply, she said in the release. A recent quote for the food bank to purchase large eggs was $6.50 per dozen.
