The signs, designed by Shive-Hattery, are a colorful greeting for motorists entering West Des Moines, city officials said.
“A monument sign is a welcoming symbol when you enter a community whether you are visiting for the first time, passing through or on your way home,” City Engineer Brian Hemesath said in a prepared statement. “We hope it sends a message that you are welcome here in West Des Moines.”
The six areas where the signs are installed are: near 98th Street and University Avenue; along the southbound lanes of Interstate Highway 35-80 near Westown Parkway; near the westbound lanes of Interstate 235 at the YMCA; near White Crane Road along Iowa Highway 5; along Veterans Parkway near the northbound lanes of Interstate 35; and along Wendover Road near the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80.
The signs, which cost $1.2 million, were installed during the week of June 15. Crews are installing electric connections for night lighting. The sign project is part of West Des Moines’ capital improvement program.
