New hospital infection data released
New performance data released this morning by the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) show mixed results in Iowa hospitals’ efforts to minimize hospital-caused infections. According to IHC’s analysis of hospitals’ data, Iowa’s statewide average infection rate from intravenous catheters was approximately half the most recent national average rate. Iowa hospitals also had fewer infections following hysterectomies and colon surgeries than the national average. However, hip and heart surgery infection rates were slightly higher than national averages. The report represents the first time Iowa hospital-specific infection rates were compared with national data tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
