A 529 plan is a type of investment account used to save for tuition, room and board, books fees and other qualified education expenses. “Saving for education encompasses a variety of paths, whether that be K-12 tuition, two- or four-year college, graduate school or apprenticeship programs,” said State Treasurer Roby Smith in a prepared statement. There are several new updates to the 529 program including an increase in the maximum amount an account owner can contribute to their account. A giveaway has been set up in conjunction with the name change; people who sign up by Sept. 30 at Iowa529Contest.com could win a $5,290 education savings contribution for a child, according to a news release.
