The World Food Prize Foundation is accepting nominations for the Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application. The award, endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation, recognizes science-based achievements in international agriculture and food production by a person under the age of 40. According to a news release, individuals must emulate the same intellectual courage, stamina and determination in the fight to end global hunger and poverty that was demonstrated by Borlaug when he was a young scientist working in Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s. “Each year, the Borlaug Field Award recognizes a researcher making progress in their field in food and agriculture,” said World Food Prize Foundation President Barbara Stinson. “This year’s recipient will honor one of a growing number of young leaders shaping the future of food security and agriculture sustainability.” Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work to develop drought resistant crops to help reduce hunger around the world. In 1986 he founded the World Food Prize Foundation, which each year holds the Borlaug International Dialogue in Des Moines, a series of programs and conversations addressing global hunger. The World Food Prize Foundation is scheduled to announce this year’s World Food Prize winner during a ceremony on Thursday morning. The prize is formally presented during the Borlaug Dialogue in October. Borlaug, known as the father of the “Green Revolution,” died in 2009.
