NOTEBOOK: Bradley Burt generates smiles to spare in Waukee

Bradley Burt must be one happy guy. I don’t know him well, but the several times I’ve talked to him I put down the telephone with a smile on my face. He exudes good cheer. And probably for good reason. He sits atop Maid Rite Corp., a homegrown Iowa institution if there ever was one, and he has his feet firmly planted on 138 acres of prime development ground at the interchange of Grand Prairie Parkway and Interstate Highway 80 in Waukee. A couple of years ago he sold 2.29 acres to Kum & Go LC, and on June 16 the convenience store giant will open the first retail operation in Kettlestone, a 6,200-square-foot structure that follows its new Marketplace design. You might have guessed that Burt is excited to have Kum & Go in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, he is contemplating his own project for the area, a roughly 6,000-square-foot events center that would host weddings, banquets and corporate events. The area is in dire need of such an operation, he said. And Burt and hospitality specialist Mike Whalen still talk about a major hotel development somewhere on the Burt land, which is zoned to allow a variety of uses, including multifamily housing, hotels and restaurants. Now that Grand Prairie Parkway is open to six lanes of traffic, retailers and developers are showing more interest. “There’s just a lot of activity now that the road is officially open,” Burt said, just before launching a pitch for the city of Waukee, the local school district and Dallas County in general. Set the phone in the cradle, and you just have to smile.
