We forgot to highlight World Environment Day on Tuesday, but that is OK. I’m not that big on Earth Day and the like just in the sense that that these “special days” seem like Hallmark events, when they address issues that need attention a lot more than once a year.

We thought we would give World Environment Day some notice by sharing Deere and Co.’s sustainability goals through 2022. Deere is a hallmark Iowa business and a big Iowa employer.

Here’s what Deere has planned:
• Occupational safety. Increased focus on leading indicators, risk reduction, health and safety management systems, and prevention.
• Sustainable energy use. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent through 50 percent renewable electricity supply and excellence in energy efficiency.
• Responsible water use. Looking to save and recycle water in all spots where water is short.
• Waste reduction. Recycle 85 percent of waste.
• Sustainability. Cut carbon emissions on 90 percent of new products. Increase sales of rebuilt equipment by 30 percent and increase use of recyclable, renewable and recycled content.
