When Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg was in Pella last week to help Lely North American celebrate the start of construction of its new headquarters, he took a little good-natured ribbing from his former college football coach, Pella Mayor Don DeWaard, who was an assistant football coach at Central College for 35 years.

“So if he starts saying things that I don’t like and I start yelling, that’s why,” DeWaard said before introducing Gregg, who graduated from Central in 2006.

“I was probably Division VI talent,” Gregg said when he took his turn at the podium, “but that was Division III football. As a backup safety, he did do a lot of yelling at me. I appreciate that now in this role, he yells at me a lot less.”
