A development partnership led by Knapp Properties Inc. has paid $725,367 for a little more than nine acres of land in Grimes that it gave to the YMCA of Greater Des Moines in 2008. The YMCA said earlier this year that it would not proceed with plans to construct a facility at the site. The organization is trying to get a handle on excess expenses as it raises funds for a swimming pool at the Wellmark YMCA in downtown Des Moines. Though the project fit in with the larger development scheme Knapp and partners have in Grimes, it didn’t go unnoticed that the YMCA also needs money for the pool. William Knapp is among influential businessmen who have raised money for the pool. “The Y does need the money,” said Knapp President and CEO Gerry Neugent. Neugent often jokes that he carried Bill Knapp’s briefcase during meetings to raise funds for the Wellmark YMCA swimming pool. In another potential boost to swimming pool construction fund, Hubbell Realty Co. President and CEO Rick Tollakson said the company was considering paying $1 million for a sliver of YMCA property at the Wellmark YMCA to build an apartment building.
