Some, including City Councilman Josh Mandelbaum, have long considered that a major hazard, as people trod along cow paths on the shoulder or even braved the well-traveled road pavement.
The Des Moines City Council now has approved sidewalks as part of the Fleur reconstruction currently underway. (You probably noticed that if you use Fleur at all. If anybody needs evasive driving practice, or a chance to participate in the new sport — slalom driving — just take a spin along Fleur’s northern reaches.)
“Sidewalks are consistent with PlanDSM, the city’s complete streets policy, and the Gray’s Lake Neighborhood Association Plan, and the recently adopted MoveDSM Transportation Master Plan,” Mandelbaum noted. “The sidewalks will improve pedestrian access and mobility along Fleur Drive and make the area safer for those walking to the amenities along Fleur or to catch the bus. It’s an important part of making Fleur a more vibrant corridor and making our community work for everyone.”
