The number of Americans with Disabilities Act Title III lawsuits filed in federal court hit an all-time high in 2021, with more than 11,400 filings, writes Marianne Wilson for Chain Store Age. Thousands of the lawsuits pertained to accessibility of websites, a type of lawsuit that was rare in 2013, the first year in which records of ADA filings were kept. Many lawsuits also claimed that hotels violated ADA standards by failing to disclose sufficient information about their accessible rooms on reservations websites as well as physical access barriers in shopping centers, restaurants and other commercial-related businesses. In California, 5,930 federal ADA-related lawsuits were filed, the most of any state. None was filed in Iowa.
