A new survey from Pew Research Center found that on the topic of artificial intelligence and the way it has and could become part of our society, the American public sees the promise of new technology for bettering our lives but still raises a collective eyebrow for a variety of reasons. “Fundamentally, caution runs through public views of artificial intelligence (AI) and human enhancement applications, often centered around concerns about autonomy, unintended consequences and the amount of change these developments might mean for humans and society,” the report says. Pew surveyed more than 10,000 individuals on their comfort level with AI applications currently in use, such as police use of facial recognition software and the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles as well as emerging technology industries like biotechnology and nanotechnology. For emerging technologies like these, a majority of respondents said that they should be held to higher safety standards. Learn more about this insight and others in the full report.
