In today’s digital and hybrid work world, going on vacation doesn’t have to mean being disconnected from the office. The Wall Street Journal reports that employees are taking more of their PTO than in recent years, but a Korn Ferry survey found that more than a third of respondents planned to check in with their office multiple times a day, up from 19% who planned to do so last year. Many are packing their laptops or checking email while waiting in lines because with staff shortages they feel like they can’t afford to unplug for a full week, or that the quality of the work they would be doing will pay the price. Matt Staser had a vacation planned a few weeks after starting a new job at an aerospace company and worked to make sure a project was completed on time. “I kind of felt bad, starting with the company and then I have to be gone for a week,” he said. “I took every opportunity I could to put in some hours and try to save face with new bosses and make a good impression.” Employers share strategies for keeping employees focused on their vacations in the rest of the piece.
