NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: Are you a Trader Joe’s hoarder?

At the start of the pandemic many of us stocked up on hard-to-find items like toilet paper and disinfectant sprays and wipes. Further into the pandemic, parents of infants  snatched up as much baby formula as possible. All perfectly understandable. But now it seems that stockpiling ? also called hoarding ? is becoming commonplace, particularly among some Trader Joe’s shoppers, according to a Wall Street Journal article written by journalists Ray A. Smith and Jaewon Kang. The grocery store, with more than 535 locations in the U.S., is known for its “quirky flavors and seasonal items ranging from pumpkin ice cream to black tea,” write Smith and Kang. Not all products stick around long, and some are only sold in certain seasons. One consumer told the journalists that she loaded up recently on her favorite ice cream, recorded a video for social media account, then put frozen treats in her freezer. Some people who follow her social media account grumbled that she was hoarding. “You get a product and you never see it again,” Natasha Fischer said. “I call it getting Trader Joe’s-ed.” Some followers of Fischer’s social media account grumbled, saying hoarders are why they can’t find their favorite Trader Joe’s products. Me? While I don’t hoard products from Trader Joe’s, I have been known to stock up on a certain Octoberfest beer ? enough to get me through the cold winter months.
