For more than a year, Business Publications Corp. has promoted a campaign focused on food insecurity called Iowa Stops Hunger. The goal of the campaign is to bring attention to the plight of those in our community who are food insecure and to shine a light on those who are helping to solve the problem. So it is timely that the nonprofit Brookings Institution this week released a report that takes an in-depth dive into the issue. The report, titled “Beyond ‘food deserts’: America needs a new approach to mapping food insecurity,” builds a case that a new method is needed to solve the problem. “Singling out neighborhoods without grocery stores as ‘food deserts’ has failed to produce a successful solution,” write Caroline George and Adie Tomer in the report. “But lessons can be drawn from decades of food access analysis to inform new methods to better measure the geography of food insecurity in the United States, and modernize our country’s nutritional assistance policies.”
