NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: Calls to volunteer fire departments are at a high but they have few first responders

Volunteer firefighters have been key in stopping fires in many communities across the U.S. and in Iowa. This NPR story details how calls to volunteer departments have gone up, but there have been fewer volunteers and those volunteers are often older. During December wildfires in Kansas, Quentin Maupin stopped farming to go respond as a volunteer firefighter. While the 18,000-pound pumper truck requires at least two people, there weren’t any available, so he went out alone – and nearly died doing it. The pandemic hasn’t helped – both with getting volunteers and getting the funding they need.
