A new partnership between League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Iowa and Vegan Outreach seeks to bring plant-based food options to more immigrant communities in Iowa, Hola Iowa reports. Recently, the two organizations focused on Cedar Rapids residents most in need in the derecho aftermath. Many organizations working to support immigrants are trying to find more ways to increase availability of plant-based diets because of the health benefits – it’s mentioned in the story that Hispanics face higher rates of obesity than white people – and because of the treatment of workers, largely immigrants, at meatpacking plants. “Since most of our Vegan Food Aid projects are focused on helping immigrant and Native American communities, it made sense to reach out to local LULAC chapters to see what we could do to support their efforts,” Vegan Food Aid Manager Yuri Mitzkewich said. “Thankfully, those local chapters helped us get vegan food out to these communities and the collaboration has been an enormous success.”
