NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: People are going out again, but not to the office

Stop in at a favorite restaurant tonight and likely plenty of people will be dining in, but Peter Grant reports for the Wall Street Journal that despite returns to dining and entertainment venues, offices are still looking more like they did in 2020 in comparison. Restaurants were nearly three-quarters as full as they were before the pandemic and attendance at NBA games was 93% of what it was in February 2020. “There’s a huge divergence between the ways that people are coming together in the other parts of their lives and the way they aren’t in the office,” said Mark Ein, chairman of Kastle Systems, which records building-access-card swipes. In December 2021, about 41% of the workforce had returned to the office, but the omicron variant quickly changed those plans. It’s a double-edged sword for restaurants and small businesses, though, Grant writes. Even if traffic picks up in the evenings and on weekends, many rely on the business of office workers stopping in during the day for lunch or errands. Some food for thought before Thursday’s Power Breakfast on downtown.
