With the fuel and horsepower of the federal infrastructure bill, a coalition of private companies, nonprofits and government agencies is trying to bring more electric vehicle chargers into rural areas. This Wall Street Journal article tells the story of Francis Energy, a startup that has been working to break into the space with varying success. But the company’s chief executive, David Jankowsky, believes this will change in a few years thanks to the $7.5 billion allocated to electric vehicle charging in the infrastructure bill and the growing development and popularity of electric pickup trucks. Francis Energy has installed 550 chargers in Oklahoma, but they aren’t being used. “It’s a huge risk that these stations are underutilized,” Jankowsky said. “I think that’s why you don’t see a lot of people doing it, especially in the markets we’re in.” The chargers need to be in use at least 5% of the time on average in order to be profitable. Jankowsky said he is confident in the Great Plains but it will take a few years to reach that point. Until then, he is playing the long game.
