NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: White House to order broad review of cryptocurrencies

The White House will issue an executive order this week instructing federal agencies to begin studying the possibility and implications of the creation of a U.S. central-bank digital currency, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Office of Science and Technology Policy will be asked to look at the technical considerations, and the Treasury Department, along with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and other agencies, will begin studying the possible risks to consumers and overall financial stability. The White House move follows the Federal Reserve’s evaluation of the pros and cons of a federally issued digital currency. The Fed released its findings in a paper in January, but did not take any stance on whether or not it supports a CBDC.
