Here’s another little tale from a visit with Hoyt Sherman Place Executive Director Robert Warren.

Grammy-winning jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis’ Sept. 28 concert at Hoyt Sherman proved to be his last.

“Ramsey was very, very much under the weather. He had just turned 86,” Warren said. Lewis asked that his co-performer Ann Hampton Callaway appear first so he could rest.

“We switched the order. He did his 60 minutes, they did an encore together. He canceled his show in St. Louis the day after and his Kansas City show the following day and he formally retired. He took his last bow on the Hoyt Sherman stage.”
