NOTEBOOK: Turn the fossil fuel clock back to ’94

This morning we reported the news that MidAmerican Energy will, by at least one measure, be the first investor-owned utility in the country to produce enough renewable energy to meet 100 percent of annual consumer demand — if its latest wind energy plans are approved and fulfilled. Now comes a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration noting that electric power industry consumption of fossil fuels is at its lowest since 1994. The same report notes that generation from natural gas and coal are running neck and neck, with gas now taking the lead. Expect more of that as utilities run full force away from coal, which has lost ground amid fears of new federal pollution regulations and growing popularity of free-fuel wind and solar operations.
