If you have a new iPhone 14 you may want to hand it off to a friend before getting on a roller coaster. The next-generation smartphone from Apple is equipped with crash detection and automatically dials 911 when it thinks you’ve been in a car accident. In this story from the Wall Street Street Journal we learn that the iPhone 14’s crash detection may be a little too sensitive. The Journal reports that the phone has dialed 911 when users are on a roller coaster, or when it’s been dropped in a car while the car is in motion. The Warren County, Ohio, communications center provided the Journal with records of six false calls from King’s Island amusement park near Cincinnati. Here is a recording of one call made from a phone while its owner was on a King’s Island ride. According to the article, an Apple spokesman said the crash-detection algorithms were validated using more than a million hours of crash data, real-world driving and tests in a lab. The spokesman said the feature is “extremely accurate in detecting crashes,” but said Apple is also working to minimize false crash reports.
