As children begin their summer vacations, parents and caregivers have a place for them to go in Greater Des Moines to receive nutritious meals and continue to be active. All kids ages 18 and younger can attend any of about 50 Summer Meal Meet-Ups sites in Polk, Warren, and Dallas Counties free of charge. The initiative is coordinated by OpportUNITY, a program of United Way of Central Iowa focused on increasing financial stability in Central Iowa. Formerly known as the Summer Food Service Program, the new name emphasizes that many of the sites will offer activities in addition to a meal. The three-county program served more than 241,000 meals last summer. Each meal site is hosted by a school, park, or other organization approved by the Iowa Department of Education. To find a meal site, go to www.SummerMealMeetUps.org, call 2-1-1, or text “Food” to 877-877.
